During the feudal period of Japan’s history, civil war was rampant. The Ninja (or Shinobi) were specially trained spies, and mercenary agents of espionage and stealth, employed by warring factions to gain intelligence about their enemies.

By the time of the Meiji Restoration in the 17th century, the Ninja had become a topic of mystery and intrigue in Japan. The Ninja appeared prominently in legend and myths where they were associated with mythical abilities such as invisibility, walking on water and having control over the natural elements.

Like most Japanese, the ninja would bathe frequently. However, for the shinobi, this was not a simple act of pleasure. Bathing formed an essential part of their routine, studied in order to recognise their enemies by smell while also being used to mask their own odours from their enemies. Herbals baths also served the Ninja as a means of cleansing and purging the body. The Ninja held a profound knowledge of medicinal herbs not only for bathing but also to help with their circulation, fatigue and treatment of battle wounds.
