The first use of the term katana to describe a sword occurred in the Japanese Kamakura period (1185–1333), although the history of bladed weapon craftsmanship in Japan extends back over twenty centuries. Originally, Japanese swords were simple versions of the Chinese swords. The first original Japanese swords, considered the precursor of the modern katana, began to appear around 700 CE.

Katana were mainly used by the samurai during feudal Japan (1185-1600) and through through to the Edo period (1603–1868).

In order to preserve the quality of their sword, the samurai committed to great care of their katana to ensure that the blade would never rust. Choji oil, a special type of oil was used by the samurai for protecting and preserving their swords.

While its composition varies, choji oil generally consists of a blend of clove oil extract and mineral oil. When applied to a katana, this combination results in a superior oil that creates a barrier of protection between the steel and the outside elements. This technique, proven as effective for centuries, is still used today.

The Katana Candle, representing strength, effectiveness and longevity, is formed by a blend of clove oil and sandalwood providing a scent that cuts through the air while still protecting and soothing the mind and soul.
